Jan Conn Visits CCC Museum

One of the many Civilian Conservation Corps projects in South Dakota, specifically the Black Hills, was construction projects and improvements to Jewel Cave National Monument. The work was done at various periods between 1935 and 1941.

The CCC Museum of South Dakota was visited by someone who connected with Jewel Cave a little later than did the men of the Civilian conservation Corps. That someone was Jan Conn. Jan and her late husband Herb mapped nearly 65 miles within Jewel Cave from 1959-1979.

With Jan were Janet Sereno and Candice Leigh. Janet grew up in the Custer, SD area and shared memories of time spent at Camp Bob Marshall and Camp Lodge, now home to Black Hills Playhouse. Candice is actively doing research at Custer State Park and other areas of western South Dakota.
